Celebrating National Principals Month: Kathie Monti of Teasley MS!

October is National Principals Month! Our Principals are amazing instructional leaders dedicated to ensuring our students learn more, grow more, and achieve more in our classrooms than they could anywhere else!  We’re recognizing these inspiring leaders with special posts throughout the month. Please join us in thanking them for all they do to support our mission of being the highest performing school district in Georgia.

Teasley Middle School Principal Kathie Monti

Why did you want to become a teacher?
I became a teacher because as a student I loved school!  I dreaded summer vacation because I missed being with my friends and teachers.  When it was time to decide on a major in college, it was an easy choice.  I remember thinking, “Just keep doing what you love.”  Also, I grew up in a household of public-school advocates.  My mom taught kindergarten for 32 years and my dad was the editor of a magazine for teachers in North Carolina.

Who was the most influential teacher in your life?
Ms. Margaret Ferguson was the most influential teacher in my life.  She was my middle school social studies teacher, student council sponsor, and my mom away from home.  She moved up to the high school when I entered ninth grade, so she was a role model and inspiration for six of the most impactful years of my life.

What’s a favorite memory from your first year as a teacher?
I remember feeling so supported by my mentor teacher, Mrs. Beth Weathersby.  She met with me every day; she encouraged me; she helped me re-work lesson plans when they failed; and she reminded me that each day was a brand new opportunity to make a difference.

How did teaching prepare you to be a Principal?
I’m not sure that teaching prepared me to be a Principal, but it did shape my perspective.  The Principals that I worked under allowed me to think outside of the box, try new things, loop up with my students, be creative, and create a learning environment that was non-traditional and engaging.  I have always strived to provide that same space for my teachers.
